Summer has finally arrived, which means the kids are out of school and you are putting together the last minute travel details of that family vacation. You want nothing more than for this to be a fun-filled, relaxing time for you and your family. Whether you plan on driving or flying, you want to make sure you and your family are safe. Here are a few tips and strategies for traveling safely this summer, so you and your family have an enjoyable vacation.

10 Summer Travel Safety Tips & Travel Hacks

Before You Leave Home Safety Tips

1. If You Are Driving:

  • Plan and map out your trip so you know where you are going. Also, estimate how long the trip will take, and don’t forget to account for breaks and unexpected delays such as the weather, detours, and roadwork.
  • Get a quick inspection of your vehicle by a qualified mechanic or technician. You want to make sure your vehicle is ready for a long-distance trip and won’t break down on you while you’re on the road.
  • Don’t overload your vehicle with luggage. You want to make sure you have a clear, unobstructed view out of all your windows and mirrors.

2. If You Are Flying:

  • Give you and your family plenty of time to get to the airport and get through security.
  • Buy a lock for your luggage to ensure that your personal items are protected on the trip.
  • Make sure to re-check your tickets to make sure you have the correct date and time of your flight to guarantee you don’t miss it.

3. Confirm all hotel or other reservations before you leave.

4. In your home, make sure all electronics are turned off and your computer is unplugged or plugged into a surge protector.

5. Have a neighbor or friend collect your mail for you while you are gone, or have the post office place your mail on hold if you will be traveling for a long period of time.

6. Give a close friend or family member all the details of your trip, including where you are going, how you are getting there, when you plan on leaving and returning, your contact information, and the contact information of where you plan on staying in case of emergencies.

7. Make sure all your doors and windows are locked and your alarm is set (if you have a home protection system).

During Your Travels and Vacation Safety Tips

8. If You Are Driving:

  • Configure your driving route before leaving home. Focus on the road and your route so you don’t get lost. With your family or friends in the car, it is easy to get distracted, however, while driving on unfamiliar roads your attention should stay on the road and driving.
  • Take frequent breaks to stretch your legs and rest. If possible, share the driving with other passengers to avoid driving while fatigued.
  • Make sure you and the passengers in your vehicle fasten your seatbelts and buckle up! (It’s the law!)

9. If You Are Flying:

  • Don’t ever leave your luggage unattended.
  • Keep a close, attentive eye on small children and remember to pack toys or other distractions for the children to keep them entertained.

10. Be aware of crime around you. Keep a close eye on your valuables and try not to put all your money in one location.
