Under the 10-20-Life Law, a criminal defendant will be subject to the following minimum mandatory sentences for gun crimes: 10 years for possession of a gun while committing a crime. 20 years for firing a gun during the commission of a crime, even if no one was hit by the bullet. 25 years to life if a person dies or is seriously injured as a result of the use of a firearm during the crime. Sentences under Florida’s 10-20-Life Law are minimum mandatory sentences. A minimum mandatory sentence requires the person serving the sentence to serve the entire sentence without any opportunity for any form of early release.
